Oxford Street and Marylebone are to the north, Piccadilly and Green Park to the south, Belgravia to the south-east and Regent Street to the east.

History of Mayfair

Mayfair is named after the annual fortnight-long May Fair that took place from 1686 to 1764. Mayfair was developed by a number of landlords, most notably the Grosvenor family, whose Grosvenor Estate still today owns most of north Mayfair, including Mount Street. The Rothschild family bought up large areas of Mayfair during the nineteenth century. The Crown Estate also own a large section of Mayfair, as well as almost the entire freehold of Regent Street – currently undergoing a £1 billion investment programme on the street. After heavy bombing during the Second World War, much of the City was forced a relocate a large number of businesses to Mayfair, taking over residential town houses in the process. Since the mid 1990’s these buildings started to revert back to residential use as they were originally intended.
